Signs Your Workplace is Toxic (and how to fix it)!

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

EMOTIONS THAT ARISE FROM A TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT SEEP INTO EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE. GET OUT! NO JOB IS WORTH THAT KIND OF MISERY.

It’s a hard thing to admit … that your work culture may be toxic but unhappy employees are less productive, make more mistakes, and are more likely to seek employment elsewhere.

LIFE IS SHORT… WORK WHERE YOU’RE CONTINUOUSLY ACCEPTED, RESPECTED, APPRECIATED, ENCOURAGED, INSPIRED, EMPOWERED AND VALUED.

Right before I started working for PosterGirl Marketing, PR & Media, I worked in a truly toxic workplace. Despite the good pay, it was impossible to imagine myself working anywhere else. How grateful am I now that not only do I earn an even better pay at PosterGirl Marketing, I can finally utilize my full career attributes and capabilities. I'm not ignored, chastised, or bullied for having an opinion and exercising my creative work ideas.

If you feel that you are working in a toxic environment, don't feel embarrassed. To some that have not ever worked in a toxic workplace, way to go. This is to warn the masses of people that currently are and to lecture the career crowd to ensure to stay away from this deadly soul crushing 9 to 5 depression.

Let's start by taking a critical look around you, in case you are using your work desktop computer to search if you are stuck in a toxic work environment. Before you can change for the better, you have to face uncomfortable truths head-on.

TOP WARNING SIGNS YOUR WORKPLACE IS TOXIC ARE:

  • poor communication and unclear expectations

  • gossiping and/or work cliques

  • aggressive bullying behavior

  • dictatorial management techniques that don’t embrace employee feedback

  • employer discouragement regarding employees that call out for emergencies, illness, or feels over worked (fatigue)

  • favoritism among employees plus imbalanced working conditions (discriminatory policies/wage gaps)

  • workaholic behavior that sacrifices healthy work/life balance

  • unrealistic workloads, deadlines, or constant job description changes

  • little (or strained interaction) between co-workers or employees, and management

  • unsafe, unethical, or morally questionable working conditions.

  • You probably won’t find all of these, and you may find problems not listed here. But whatever problems you find – take note. Those issues will inform your plan to rescue yourself from this work culture.
